We are delighted to share that Enniscorthy Community Allotments has been featured in a brand-new video created by Wexford County Council, highlighting the climate-positive measures introduced at our site through the Community Climate Action Programme.

Located in Bellefield, Enniscorthy, our allotments received just over €19,000 in funding through this programme, funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment. This support has allowed our team to continue developing practical, meaningful climate-action measures that benefit not only our gardeners but the wider community.

Showcasing Climate Action in Our Community

In the video, Michael Devereux, Chairperson of Enniscorthy Community Allotments, introduces viewers to the improvements made possible thanks to the funding. Michael shares the passion and purpose behind the project, emphasising how the allotments are not simply a place to grow food, but a community-driven effort to grow resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable habits.

He highlights how the Phase 1 funding enabled upgrades that support better water use, improve composting systems, create more accessible pathways, enhance soil health, and promote education around sustainable gardening. These measures strengthen the allotments as a shared green space for all.

Insights From Wexford County Council

Following Michael’s introduction, the video features two key voices from Wexford County Council who explain the vision behind the Community Climate Action Programme and the impact of community-led climate projects.

Frank Burke. Climate Action Coordinator, Wexford County Council

Frank speaks about the importance of empowering local communities to take direct climate action. He explains how projects like ours fit into Wexford County Council’s broader climate strategy; focusing on sustainability, community involvement, biodiversity, and long-term resilience. Frank also highlights the value of partnership between local government and grassroots initiatives, noting that real climate action begins at community level.

Sandra Martin. Community Climate Action Officer, Wexford County Council

Sandra provides a warm and encouraging perspective on the role of the Community Climate Action Programme. She explains how the funding helps communities implement practical, high-impact measures: from composting to water conservation, planting schemes, habitat creation, and climate education.

Sandra also highlights the enthusiasm of the Enniscorthy Allotments team and how their project serves as an inspiring example of what local action can achieve with the right support.

What the Funding Has Helped Us Achieve

Thanks to the €19,000 Community Climate Action Programme grant, the allotments have been able to strengthen our environmental efforts in several key areas:

  • 🌿 Expanded composting infrastructure to reduce waste and build healthier soil

  • 💧 Improved water management, helping us conserve water and build resilience during dry periods

  • 🦋 Biodiversity enhancements, including pollinator-friendly planting

  • Site accessibility improvements, ensuring more people can enjoy and engage with the allotments

  • 🌱 Educational opportunities for members and visitors to learn practical climate-positive gardening methods

These measures all contribute to our mission of making the allotments a welcoming, sustainable, and climate-aware community space.

A Community Effort Worth Celebrating

We are deeply grateful to Wexford County Council and to the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment for supporting our project through Phase 1 of the Community Climate Action Programme.

A special thank-you also goes to:

  • Michael Devereux, for leading the project with dedication

  • Frank Burke and Sandra Martin, for championing local climate action

  • And most importantly, our wonderful allotment members, whose hard work, enthusiasm and community spirit bring these climate-action measures to life every day

Together, we’re making small but meaningful steps toward a greener, more resilient Wexford.
